ODACA is an organization of artists who create original art dolls. These dolls are entirely the work of the artist. They are not made from commercial molds or patterns. ODACA’s mission statement is directed at the education of doll collectors about original dolls and the artists who create them. ODACA also encourages doll artists to achieve and maintain the highest possible standards for their work.
Phase One
Original art doll artists who wish to apply for artist membership must fill out and submit an application form with the requested information, either online or via USPS, to the ODACA Membership/Standards Committee chairperson, along with digital photographs on a CD of five different dolls which represent the applicant’s finest work. These images should be contained on five identical CD disks, as each member of the standards committee must have a disk for review.
Your photos should be as professional as you can make them, and should clearly show your dolls’ faces,
bodies, arms and legs. Please do not send photos of incomplete dolls. If your photography skills are lacking, it might be best to have your dolls photographed professionally. Whether
you do your own photography or hire a professional, you may find this information
useful. You want to show your dolls to their best advantage!
You can find a set of instructions on How
to Photograph your dolls, if
you should chose to do so yourself.
The standards committee will review the photographs on your CD, then critique and vote on your work. The committee places emphasis on artistic expression, originality, presentation, professionalism and to what extent you have refined your medium.
Phase Two
If your total score in the first phase equals our acceptance standards, the committee chair will notify you. In that event, you’ll be asked to submit a print portfolio for the second phase of the critique process. Your photographs for Phase Two must be submitted as high quality, glossy, 8” x 10” prints.
In the portfolio folder we will ask for:
- 1. A one page biography
- 2. A short artist's statement
- 3. A listing of any shows or teaching events in which you have participated.
- 4. Seven 8 x 10 photo prints of 'art quality dolls'.
ODACA wants to see seven different dolls that represent your best work. We do
not want to see production work.
- 5. One 8 x 10 photo prints of a close-up
of one of your doll's faces.
- 6. One or two 8 x 10 photo prints of
your doll's naked body, with an explanation of how you create the interior and
exterior of that body (armature or otherwise).
Phase Three
If your portfolio receives the required number of votes, you will be asked and expected to attend the next ODACA Day annual meeting (at your own expense) for a personal interview by the standards committee. You will also be asked to bring with you three of your best dolls. These dolls will undergo a final, hands-on critique. Passing that, you will be invited to become an artist member of ODACA.
Passing that, you will be invited to become an Artist Member of ODACA. If you have any questions about the process, please don’t hesitate to contact Myra Sherrod, ODACA 2nd Vice-President and Standards Committee Chairman.
Best Regards and Best of Luck.
